Glenn Maxwell didn’t have patience against me: Yuzvendra Chahal
Chahal has gotten rid of Maxwell six times in international cricket.
Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell isn’t someone to die wondering. His ODI and T20I strike-rates of 123.37 and 160 pretty much sum up his approach in the middle. But it has also led to his downfall quite a few times. Among bowlers he has had troubles against, Yuzvendra Chahal is one. The Indian skipper leg-spinner has accounted for his wicket six times in his international career.
Maxwell hasn’t scored heavily while facing Chahal either. Throwing light on his style of batting, Chahal said that Victorian lacked patience and always resorted to attack when the spinner was introduced. The Haryana cricketer recalled a game during the home series back in September 2017.
In that game at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, Maxwell could only manage five off 13 balls. Chahal said that he varied his pace, leading to the batsman’s dismissal. Maxwell charged down the track to a wide-delivery only to be stumped by MS Dhoni.
Knew Glenn Maxwell would come down the track, says Chahal
“That was the 3rd match in Indore. That ground has short straight boundaries. So, my plan to him has always been to keep it wide outside off-stump and keep mixing it up. Mostly I used to bowl wide deliveries and few ones in between at the stumps,” Chahal was quoted as saying during a chat with Mayank Agarwal on the show ‘Open Nets with Mayank’.
“So, Mahi bhai and I had planned to keep it wide. On this delivery I knew he would come down the track, so I bowled it even wider,” the tweaker stated. In the series, Maxwell got out to Chahal as many as three times. Chahal told how they kept the wider delivery as a surprise element in order to trap Maxwell.
“In this series he did not have patience, he only had attack in his mind. Whenever I used to come to bowl, he started playing his shots. So, I discussed with Mahi bhai regarding our plans. Mahi bhai told me to mix my deliveries and not to show him the wider deliveries. We should only bowl wide when we are sure of getting him out,” Chahal added.
The last time when Chahal pinned Maxwell was in the 2019 World Cup. The Victorian scored 28 runs at the Kennington Oval in London before getting out. Against India, Maxwell has averages of 35.30 and 33.90 in T20Is and ODIs respectively. He also notched a Test ton against them at Ranchi in 2017.
