Glenn Maxwell hit on the helmet while batting at training
After Maxwell, Mathew Wade too was struck on the helmet by fast bowler Pat Cummins.
Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell suffered a blow to his helmet when he was hit on the helmet by a local bowler during a practice session at Lord’s. The explosive batsman seemed to be okay after he received treatment from the team doctor Peter Brukner.
The incident happened when Maxwell was batting in the middle net and was hit following to get out of the way of a bouncer. He immediately showed discomfort and slowly lowered down as the bowler along with his teammates and team doctor rushed to check on Maxwell’s well-being.
After checking on the impact of the injury, Dr Brukner and Maxwell left for the dressing room to put ice on the blow. Brukner addressed Maxwell’s jaw and the top of his neck. It was later confirmed that the star all-rounder did not suffer any injury, much to the relief of the Australian camp.
Wade gets hit too
The training session was a lengthy one and minutes after Maxwell’s incident, wicket-keeper batsman Mathew Wade was also struck on the helmet by fellow teammate Pat Cummins. The Australian training session did not lack in intensity as the ICC Champions Trophy is just a week away.
Australia will play two warm-up games against Sri Lanka and Pakistan on May 26 and May 29 respectively. Having won the title twice earlier, Australia will be looking to win it for the third time, a feat no country has registered yet.
Australia, like defending champions India, will kick start their campaign against arch-rivals New Zealand on June 2 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. They then take on Bangladesh and last year’s runners-up England on June 5 and June 10 respectively.
It will be the first time Steve Smith will be leading Australia in a major ICC tournament. Australia are the World Champions having won the World Cup in 2015 under the leadership of Michael Clarke. It remains to be seen how Steve Smith fairs as a captain in an ICC event.
