‘The Big Show’ is what they call Glenn Maxwell. His confidence to clear the ropes with ease is stunning. No matter who the bowler is, he can pounce on them and decimate them. Maxwell plays such great knocks at the back end of the innings that makes a good score look like a great score. He is a valuable asset to the captain as he can chip in with few overs as well.
Maxwell has been in and out of the Test team for quite a while. He was overlooked for the Ashes series too. The Marsh brothers were chosen by the selectors for the lower middle order. Maxwell was forced to watch the series from the stands despite his excellent form in the Sheffield Shield.
Domestic performances
Maxi who was axed for the Ashes opener against England in Brisbane in favour of Shaun Marsh – has scored 590 runs in five matches for Victoria this season, including a stunning 278, at an average of 73.75. However, both Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh have done well in whatever chances that they’ve got. The Australians have quite a few players for the No.6 and 7 spots.
“I think I’ve got a lot of unfinished business with the Baggy Green,” Maxwell was quoted as saying to the ABC’s Grandstand. “I think I’ve made some big improvements this year with my technique and the way I’ve batted. We’ve had a long run of Shield cricket where I could actually concentrate on what I need to do. It’s been nice to be able to concentrate on trying to get better, I was able to go away and change some things technically and mentally to get ready for the Shield season.”
A poor Test record
‘The Big Show’ does not have a good Test record to his name. He has scored 339 runs at a mediocre average of 26.07. He is seen more as a power hitter than someone who can play long innings. With Shaun Marsh and Mitchell Marsh in form, it remains to be seen if Maxi gets his break anytime soon.
