The Big Bash League (BBL) clash between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers turned out to be a one-sided encounter on Tuesday. The Sixers attained a magnificent victory by 8 wickets with almost five overs to spare. Melbourne players Glenn Maxwell and Kevin Pietersen weren’t quite pleased with the MCG surface.
This isn’t the first time something of this sort has happened. After the fourth Ashes test at the MCG last month, match referee Ranjan Madugalle had rated the deck poor. The test match had ended in a tame draw. The ICC gave an official warning to Cricket Australia (CA) regarding the same.
Glenn Maxwell voiced his concern over the Melbourne track. The Australian discard scored 28(16) in today’s encounter as his team was restricted to a total of 128/7. He stated that the pitch was nowhere playing how it was supposed to.
“It might look that way but it certainly is not playing that way. Balls are seaming, taking off and not getting through. They obviously tried to compensate with what happened through the Test match and put a bit too much water into it now.” he was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.
Not a great T20 wicket
Kevin Pietersen who is playing his last BBL season also raised concern about the pitch. He didn’t have a great outing as the 37-year-old failed to cross the double figures. He indicated that the uneven bounce on the surface made it look poor.
“It’s actually not very special. It’s wavy. If you look down the wicket and it’s wavy. The grassy longer bit just seems to be doing a little bit more off the longer grass. There is a little bit too much to do for the batsmen to trust the bounce. It’s not a great wicket for a T20 spectacle, put it that way,” he said.
