Glenn McGrath impressed with young Indian fast bowlers’ energy level and passion
McGrath also spoke about India’s fast bowling recently, especially in relation with the ongoing England series.
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath was all praise for India’s fast bowling prospects saying he is impressed with energy level and passion for cricket and that every time he visits India, he notices the improvements in their game. McGrath, also fondly called Pigeon in his playing days and currently, the director of the Chennai-based MRF Pace Foundation said the effort is always on to guide the youngsters to play the next level.
The 48-year-old former great – the highest wicket-taking (563) fast bowler in Tests – is in Bengaluru for a two-day workshop with Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) players and coaches organised by his pace foundation, spoke on various issues including Indian captain Virat Kohli’s blistering rise to the top.
Enjoyed working with young Indian bowlers
Speaking to Sportstar, McGrath said: “I have enjoyed working with young Indian bowlers, and I am impressed with their energy and passion for the game. Each time I come here, it’s nice to see the improvements. We try to make sure most of them go on to play the next level — Ranji Trophy, IPL or India-A. We have a few of our (MRF Pace Foundation) boys playing for India-A at the moment, like Khaleel Ahmed, M Prasidh Krishna and Ankit Rajpoot.”
The former cricketer was particularly impressed with Rajpoot saying: “I am a big fan of Ankit. I think he has the potential to go on to represent India. I like his attitude, the areas that he bowls, and he has big strong legs.” He also spoke about Basil Thampi, who has played in the Indian Premier League.
McGrath has spoken about India’s fast bowling recently, especially in relation with the ongoing England series. He said India’s speedster Ishant Sharma needed to figure out his role in the team, adding that the lanky pacer was yet to evolve as the spearhead of the bowling attack and played for as a workhorse. He though praised Sharma for learning the art of adaptability more.
McGrath played 124 Tests for Australia between 1993 and 2007 and of his 563 wickets, 51 came against India in just 11 matches.
