That is between me and Glenn, says Steve Smith on Maxwell's ouster
Recently, Steve Smith was spotted chatting with Glenn Maxwell at a cafe.
Australian skipper Steve Smith is looking forward to the ODI challenge against the visiting English side. Team Australia recently drubbed England 0-4 in the Ashes 2017-18. Now, the two sides are set to lock horns in a five-match ODI series. Interestingly, these fixtures would collide with the business end matches of the popular Big Bash League.
When asked if the BBL could overshadow the ODI series, Steve Smith commented that it will not be the case from the players point of view. Smith, who was herculean in the Tests with 687 runs at an average close to 120, remarked that the players aim to play for their countries and that remains to be of paramount importance.
“Not from the players’ point of view, no. Everyone does everything they can to play for Australia or England. That’s your ultimate – to play for your country. The Big bash has been a great success and draws plenty of crowds but I hope the one-day set-up does the same. I think we’ll see some very entertaining cricket and there’s some good talent on show,” quoted Steve Smith.
On England’s lineup
Team England faced serious drubbing in the Ashes. However, they have been a force to reckon with when it comes to the ODIs. When mentioned if England could enjoy better results in ODIs, Smith hoped for the opposite. The likes of Liam Plunkett and Adil Rashid have been added to the English side for the series. Also, the change in captaincy with skipper Eoin Morgan taking over the duties in limited overs cricket does make an impact on the side.
“I hope not. I’ve played a lot against those guys in the Champions Trophy, in series in England and here, too. But it’s a different line-up and each of the guys in their team have a different set of skills. They’re good one-day bowlers and a good one-day outfit so it’s a good challenge,” conceded the Australian captain.
On his meeting with Glenn Maxwell
Recently, Steve Smith was spotted chatting with Glenn Maxwell at a cafe. Many speculated that the two had met in order to settle the alleged heated relationship between them. Smith had made some harsh criticism against Glenn Maxwell and the latter has also been dropped from the Australia ODI squad now.
When asked if he could give an insight about the meeting, Smith answered in negative. He reiterated that Maxwell’s poor form is the only reason why he is out of the Australian team at the moment. “Nope. It was between me and Glenn. It was really good to catch up. I get on really well with Glenn so it was good to catch up and just have a chat,” said Steve Smith.
“The selectors said he has averaged 20 in his last 20 games and we need those runs in the middle. So it is crucial that we find them. I am confident that the guys here at the moment can do that job,” Smith added further.
