The schedule of the tournament has now been announced as Toronto Nationals and Vancouver Knights will lock horns in the opening game of the season.
Toronto is led by Darren Sammy and it will be an interesting face off as he will stack up against the likes of Chirs Gayle and Andre Russell of Knights. Steve Smith also will be in action on the first day of the league for the Toronto even as his Australia teammate David Warner will play his first game on June 29 as Montreal Tigers and Winnipeg Hawks face-off.
Chairman excited for the league
Gurmeet Singh, the Chairman of Global T20 Canada, was excited after the schedule was finalised and believed that it will be a huge success. “The schedule reveal is another symbolic step towards bringing the excitement and spectacle of pro Twenty20 cricket to Canada and making cricket and Canadian sports history. With the calibre of talent coming to Canada, fans will see top international stars in every match from the opener through to the final,” he was quoted as saying by Inside Sport.
The schedule will see the match being played across two rounds and playoffs which includes in the final of the tournament as well. The second round is an interesting one as the chance has been given to all the six teams in the points table to come out on top like a mini semi-final format. The playoffs will actually see four teams playing a proper semi-final to secure their place in the mega-finale. The title clash will be played on July 15 at Maple Leaf Cricket Club in King City, Ontario, just north of Toronto.
“The schedule provides many opportunities for fans from all over to see many of cricket’s star players, and plan their day around Global T20 Canada. Creating a strong fan experience is paramount and will help build a strong foundation for the league going forward,” the Tournament Director Jason Harper added.
