Delhi Capitals, a relatively inexperienced side, thumped a veteran Chennai Super Kings and paved their way up to the top of the points table. Led by Shreyas Iyer, Capitals exhibited a strong batting display on Friday and followed it up by impactful bowling. CSK never looked in the game and the Yellow Army managed to post a meagre 131 while hunting a 175-run total.

After being put to bat first, DC openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw laid the foundation by stitching a steady 94-run opening stand. 20-year-old Shaw also notched up a brilliant half-century, slamming a 43-ball 64 to bolster his side’s run-flow.

After the departure of Shaw and Dhawan, skipper Iyer and swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant stitched a 58-run partnership to steer DC to a total of 175 runs. Despite not hitting many sixes in the innings, the Delhi side was able to put up a challenging score on the board.

In response, CSK, repeating their unimpressive batting show, failed to weave a match-winning partnership. Faf du Plessis and Kedar Jadhav did raise the hopes of CSK fans by gathering a 54-run stand. However, after their departure, victory looked like a distant dream for the Chennai side. In the end, they managed to post just 131 runs in their stipulated 20 overs.

Chennai ke batsman simply not getting going: Virender Sehwag

It certainly was a lacklustre batting performance from the Chennai batting unit, who rather missed the services of Ambati Rayudu– the star performer in their IPL 2020 opener against defending champions Mumbai Indians.

After their thumping defeat against DC, many former players and fans were critical of CSK’s woeful batting show. In its last two matches, the Chennai franchise has miserably failed while chasing a demanding total. Moreover, a lot of fans were unimpressed with skipper Dhoni’s decision to not come up the batting order.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag also pointed out Chennai Super Kings’ batting woes and said that they might’ve to resort to taking glucose before their next match. “Chennai ke batsman simply not getting going. Glucose chadwaake aana padega next match se batting karne,” tweeted Sehwag, who was known for his fearless mindset and explosive batting forte.

After suffering two consecutive defeats, CSK will get a much-needed 6-day break before they resume their IPL 2020 campaign. CSK’s campaign in October will start with them facing Sunrisers Hyderabad at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 2nd October.
