Manohar Parrikar, the chief minister of Goa who had been ailing for some time now, passed away at a hospital in Panaji, Goa, on Sunday. The four-time chief minister was serving his latest term since March 2017 after a stint as the defence minister. The BJP leader was suffering from pancreatic cancer and was 63 at the time of his demise. The announcement of his death was made in a tweet by President Ram Nath Kovind and people across the spectrum came up with their condolences.

Born in Mapusa, Goa, in 1955, Parrikar was educated in IIT Bombay and by becoming an MLA in his state in the mid-1990s, he was the first IITian to become a legislator of an Indian state. The man, who was fond of Goan fish curry, had once said that he missed his favourite dish during his stint in New Delhi. He served as the defence minister between November 2014 when he replaced an overburdened foreign minister Arun Jaitley and continued till March 2017 when he returned to Goa to become its CM again following the Assembly election – proving that there was not many options his state had when it came to political leadership.

“Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten,” President Kovind tweeted about Parrikar’s death.

The health condition of Parikkar, who was seen working with a frail appearance and pipes attached to his nose, fluctuated in the recent times and he was seen in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since February 2018. Last month, the senior politician was admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital near Panaji. His condition deteriorated on Saturday. In January, he had said that he would “serve Goa till my last breath” and he indeed kept his words.
