Gorgeous city ruined by fools, says Kevin Pietersen on Christchurch shooting

Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has condemned the dastardly mass shooting in Christchurch while also slamming the abuse and hatred that have surfaced online after the incident. New Zealand, one of the most peaceful countries on the planet, was rocked on Friday as nearly 50 people were killed and 20 seriously injured after terror attacks at two mosques in Christchurch. The planned attack took place in the afternoon when both the mosques were filled with people while some Bangladesh cricketers were about to enter one of them.

New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, said that it was ‘one of New Zealand’s darkest days’ as the whole world is still trying to come to terms with the inhumane turn of events.  Several Bangladesh players and some staff members were in their bus and about to come out of it to offer their prayers at the Al Noor Mosque when the shooting was heard. But somehow, they managed to escape the shooting incident.

The players first went to the Hagley Oval before safely making it back to their hotel. Soon after the incident, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the New Zealand Cricket Board agreed to cancel the scheduled third Test at the Hagley Oval, scheduled to start on Saturday (March 16). The Bangladesh players are set to return to their home as soon as possible.

The whole world is condemning the attack and the cricketing world has not remained far behind. Several former and present players have taken to Twitter to condemn the attack and Pietersen has joined the list too. But unlike most of his fellow cricketers, he not only condemned the attack but also slammed those who are promoting hatred and abuse on social media.

Khaled Mashud narrates horrific incident:

Bangladesh Team Manager Khaled Mashud has revealed just how horrific the scenes were in Christchurch when the players and the staff members found themselves in the mid of the shooting.

“It was like a movie, bleeding people running out of the building. We were on the bus floor for about 10 minutes,” Mashud told reporters in Christchurch. “We were very close to the mosque. We could see the mosque. We are lucky in the sense that if we had arrived three-four minutes earlier, we would have been in the mosque and then it could have been a massive accident.”

“We were lucky that we were not inside but from outside we saw it and it was quite similar to a movie. We saw people coming out of the mosque covered in blood. We were in the bus for eight to 10 minutes and we were lying down inside.”
