The captain of Zimbabwe Cricket team, Graeme Cremer, refused to believe that the Sri Lankan players were involved in match-fixing. Earlier in July, Sri Lanka suffered a humiliating series defeat against underdogs Zimbabwe by a margin of 3-2.
There have been speculations regarding the nature of play from the Sri Lankans in a particular match which indicated towards match-fixing. That said, there is no specific evidence of the allegations on the Sri Lankan team.
“I don’t think the Sri Lankan players would do something like that, they love their cricket and country too much to do that,” claimed Graeme Cremer from Harare according to Pak observer. The other factor which forced Cremer to dismiss these rumors is that they wouldn’t want to take the credit away from themselves after a notable achievement.
Zimbabwe sparked a revolutionary revival in International cricket and as a result, the likes of Brendan Taylor have returned after initially retiring looking at the improvement in the structure of their cricket in the country.
Zim kept the Lankans on the backfoot even in the Test match
“I don’t have much to say about the match-fixing allegations, our team played well and no one can take that (glory) away from us. I don’t believe it (the allegations) is true,” further added the leg-spinner. Zimbabwe was on course to win even the Test match played as they put the home side under pressure throughout the majority of the match.
The likes of Hamilton Mazakadza, Sean Ervine, Malcolm Waller, Solomon Mire, Sikandar Raza and the captain himself played out of their skins during the series.
The five-match ODI series was locked at 2-2 before the last ODI was played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, Sooriyawewa, Hambantota.
The toss and the match (thus the series) was won by Zimbabwe and both notable awards of Man of the Match (Sikandar Raza) and Man of the Series (Hamilton Masakadza) were won by the Zimbabwe players.
