After an indifferent first day of the opening Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, England were eventually bowled out for 287 runs in 89.4 overs. James Anderson and Stuart Broad are two of their gun bowlers in Test cricket and the duo would’ve desperately wished to make inroads into India’s celebrated batting order.
They sensed an opportunity in the third over to pick up their first wicket. Anderson struck Murali Vijay on the pads and the English players appealed in unison and literally pleaded the on-field umpire to raise his finger. However, the umpire remained unmoved. Subsequently, the Brits opted for the Decision Review System (DRS).
He’s like an excitable puppy
Unfortunately, replays showed that the ball was missing the stumps. Each team gets a couple of reviews for the entire innings. England lost an important review and it somewhat agitated Graeme Swann. He called for Jonny Bairstow, one of the players who played a major part in taking the review, to be banned from voicing his opinion while contemplating resorting to the DRS.
“Jonny Bairstow should be completely struck off from being allowed to call for reviews. He’s like an excitable puppy. Paul Collingwood always used to steam in from point saying it was definitely out, only for it to be missing by miles. So he was banned from making reviews in our team,” Swann was quoted as saying by BBC Test Match Special.
Vijay survived the initial scare, but couldn’t make optimum utilisation of the early reprieve. Sam Curran, who is currently playing his second Test accounted for his wicket. Even that time, the Three Lions went for the review. Fortunately for them, the decision to go upstairs didn’t falter and the Indian opener was dismissed for 20 runs from 45 deliveries. The wicket also triggered a mini-collapse.
