The selectors ignored Mayank Agarwal once again while picking the Test squad for the last two Test matches against England. They went ahead with Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari as many felt Agarwal should’ve got the nod given that he’s been scoring runs and is the in-form batsman. But he isn’t worried much about his national call-up and wants to pile on the runs while he is in the great mind space.
Agarwal set new records in the last Ranji Trophy season by amassing 1160 runs in 13 innings. He continued to make the noise with the bat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well and went on to score 723 runs in eight innings. He was expected to be picked during the Sri Lanka series at home. But the selectors didn’t pick him and now they have preferred to go with Shaw when Agarwal was in the wings.
However, the 27-year-old kept it straight and simple when asked about the continuous snub. He was of the opinion that he wants to continue scoring runs and make the most of his purple patch which has been extended from last season.
I am happy with my progress
“I think I am very happy with the progress. I am very happy with the way I am batting. I am in a great mindspace and I want to continue batting and scoring runs. Scoring 2000 runs in a domestic season is not a joke. I am very, very happy with the way I am batting,” he said while speaking to firstpost. He also didn’t give much weight to his failure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year while playing for the Kings XI Punjab.
“Yes, I did not have a good IPL. I have to look at my performances as a whole season and not just one tournament. I cannot say that I need to do well only in this tournament. I understand that I have not done well in IPL but if I have to look at the whole year, I think I am batting extremely well,” Mayank added.
As it stands now, Agarwal is currently playing in the ongoing quadrangular tournament for India A. India B, Australia A and South Africa A are the other three teams and he will only hope to continue scoring runs and wait for the elusive national call-up.
