Great news for Indian cricket that Rohit Sharma is fit: Sunil Gavaskar
Gavaskar mentioned that the BCCI may conduct Rohit’s fitness test before including him back in the Indian teams.
Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar reckons that Rohit Sharma’s return to fitness augurs well for the Indian team in the upcoming times. Of late, there has been a lot of ruckus surrounding the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) skipper.
After the 33-year-old sustained a hamstring strain during the game against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in Dubai, he was left out from the tour of Australia. However, raising a few eyebrows, the Nagpur-born made a comeback in MI’s league match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
When asked about his fitness, Rohit mentioned that he’s up and running. Gavaskar was happy with Rohit patrolling both the 30-yard circle and the boundary, giving an account of his fitness levels.
Rohit Sharma looked confident, says Sunil Gavaskar
“Whatever has transpired earlier with regards to his (Rohit) injury, keeping that aside, I would say it’s a great news for Indian cricket that Rohit Sharma is fit. Look, the concern shown by everyone collectively that there could be a rupture (if he hurries his return) is a valid one.
“But he looked confident. He fielded at the boundary ropes and also in the 30-yard circle,” Gavaskar was quoted as saying on Sports Tak.
Earlier, Sourav Ganguly, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said that Rohit can be included in the squads provided he’s fit. Speaking on the same, Gavaskar mentioned that the BCCI may conduct Rohit’s fitness test before including him back in the Indian teams.
“He played the match to show that he is fit but if BCCI wants to test his fitness again, then there is nothing wrong in it. Because they want to check if he is fully fit or not. Maybe, he will be monitored. Normally, when you come back from injury, you need to play a few matches as match fitness determines your fitness status,” he stated.
Keeping the Australia tour aside, Rohit is currently busy focussing on MI’s journey in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 playoffs. In the first qualifier, Mumbai will be facing Delhi Capitals (DC) on Thursday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. MI would be going into the game on the back of a 10-wicket defeat the hands of the Sunrisers.
