The Indian skipper Virat Kohli continued to garner praises from all around the globe as the former Australian captain Greg Chappell spoke highly about Kohli’s attitude towards the longest format. The plaudits came after seeing his hunger to perform best across three formats and keeping Test cricket as his top priority.
The veteran of the game spoke about the importance of Test cricket and how the youngsters playing this beautiful sport are getting inclined towards the shortest format and not giving as much importance to Test Cricket, as it’s required. He said these in a recent interview with News 18.
Chappell was undoubtedly one of the best batsmen during his prime days for Australia which eventually helped him to amass 7110 runs at an average of 53.86. The former Aussie captain has also coached the Indian national cricket team in the past.
Virat values Test Cricket
Chappell, who is known to speak his heart out said: “With three formats, young players growing up watching Twenty20 cricket and seeing what the top players do and wanting to play all the fancy shots straightaway… it’s an issue. The players who are good at T20 now, grew up thinking about Test cricket or at worst, 50-over cricket.”
“Virat Kohli is one of the best T20 players in the world, he’s also one of the best 50-over players in the world and he is one of the best Test players in the world. He didn’t start with 20-over cricket. His attitude is not only important to him and to Indian cricket, but it’s also important to world cricket. He values Test cricket and the effect that this was back in India must be enormous. And I think it’s huge for the game,” he added.
There isn’t an inch of doubt that the fan base of T20 cricket is increasing with each passing day, more so, because of the influx of domestic T20 leagues around the globe, but the ultimate format is still on top and continues to draw the respect of fans and players all over the globe. It will be interesting to see where it heads going into the future.
