Gujarat Titans got off to a dream start in their opening match against Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While it was Mohammed Shami who struck thrice in his first spell destroying the top order of the opposition, Varun Aaron also scalped a wicket in his second over courtesy of a splendid running catch from Shubman Gill to send back Evin Lewis.

It happened in the fourth over of the innings when LSG were already in trouble having lost both their openers and needed a partnership. Lewis was crucial to their plans but off the fourth ball of the over, in an attempt to play a pull shot off a short delivery outside off, didn’t time it at all.

The ball went high in the air but wasn’t going the distance. Shubman Gill, standing at mid-wicket, sensed an opportunity and ran with an eye on the ball. He times his jump as the ball came down to pluck a sensational catch.

Sensational Shami stuns Lucknow with the new ball

Shubman Gill’s mind-boggling catch was the only moment when the spotlight shifted from Shami in the first six overs of the innings. After opting to bowl first, the Titans had a ball at the Wankhede Stadium right from the first over. Shami bowled a literally unplayable delivery to KL Rahul first up to dismiss him and then breached the defences of Quinton de Kock and Manish Pandey then to leave LSG reeling.

The Rahul-led side was struggling at 32/4 at the end of powerplay making it one of the worst starts for a new franchise in the IPL. Gujarat Titans didn’t pick many superstars in their side in the auction and built the squad around the players they picked ahead of the event. The way their bowling attack has shaped up, the team can certainly prove to be a force to reckon with this season.
