The start of the fifth day of the third Ashes game was delayed due to heavy rain early in the morning. The rain with powerful wind continued pouring on the WACA field making the Australians nervous a bit. The cover’s on-off drama continued as the confusion around the ground regarding the inspection or the start of the play was not clear. Sun continued to play the hide and seek as the players were locked inside the dressing rooms.
With Australia needing 6 English wickets to regain the URN back from England, the continuous drizzle and condition at the 22 yards would’ve been worrying the Australian team and skipper Steve Smith who played a brilliant inning of 239 runs in the first innings helping the side take a huge first inning lead.
The ground staffs of the WACA were on their toes as the powerful wind kept taking the old-fashioned covers for a toss. Suddenly a small storm arrived at the WACA and knocked a ground-staff who was standing there. England skipper Joe Root along with an umpire was standing pretty close to the pitch and he wasn’t spared by the wind and cover either as It swept over England skipper who could only managed to score 14 runs in the second innings leaving them high and dry.
The umbrella of the umpire was shattered because of the wind as one can see It broken every bit in his hands. Umpires eventually were forced to take an early lunch. With rain continuing, the number of overs allowed in the day were getting lesser with every minute.
When the rain finally stopped, the ground staffs at the WACA were seeing using the blowers to dry up the wet patches at the crease. Eventually, the play resumed as the bright sun arrived at the WACA helping the groundsmen in their cause drying the pitch and outfield.
