Harbhajan Singh agrees with Ravi Shastri over Kuldeep Yadav being India's No.1 spinner overseas
The veteran also felt that Jadeja will be the second choice spinner ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin
Kuldeep Yadav has been gaining accolades for his fantastic bowling across all formats. After creating an enigma in limited overs cricket, the chinaman bowler also went on to register a five-wicket haul at the SCG. The 24-year-old will be crucial in determining India’s success in the upcoming World Cup.
Recently, Indian coach Ravi Shastri stated that Kuldeep was India’s No.1 spinner when it came to overseas conditions. Harbhajan Singh endorsed the same and felt that India were heading towards a new direction. The veteran also felt that Jadeja will be the second choice spinner ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin.
Moeen Ali overshadowed Ashwin in England
Harbhajan Singh was quick to agree with the Indian coach regarding Kuldeep being India’s top spin option overseas. While he admired Ashwin for the way he bowled in the first Test in England, the Turbanator conceded that his performances went downhill. He further felt that it was in the best interests of the team.
“With what Ravi bhai has said about Kuldeep being your no.1 spinner in overseas conditions, I think the team is now going to that zone where they are looking for wicket-taking options. Look, Ashwin started off so well in England and was a joy to watch in the first Test but he lost his way as the series progressed and Moeen Ali overshadowed him. It’s a tough call but I am sure it’s in the best interest of the team,” he was quoted as saying by India Today.
Kuldeep Yadav made most of the opportunity he got
Ashwin has been a phenomenal spinner when it comes to playing at home. However, in overseas conditions, the off-spinner doesn’t have a great record. Harbhajan asserted that Kuldeep made most of his opportunities and lauded his effort at Sydney. He further stated that Ravindra Jadeja too was impressive in both the tours.
“Ashwin’s home record is impressive but his overseas record is not the same. That’s why the team management thinks Kuldeep should be preferred over Ashwin. He made most of the opportunity he got. To get five wickets away like he did at Sydney is no mean task. I think Jadeja did well too by performing at Melbourne, Sydney and at the Oval in England. So I think this spin duo could take things forward from here,” Bhajji further added.
