Despite dominating in the first Test at Centurion, Team India never won a game thereafter as they went on to lose the Test and the following three-match ODI series. While the pace attack was impressive, the spinners disappointed on flat wickets in the One Day International series with both senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal unable to show any aggressive intent, especially in the middle overs.
Meanwhile, former offie Harbhajan Singh has come forward and said that India desperately needs Kul-Cha combining wrist spinner Kuldeep Chahal and Yuzvendra Chahal back in the limited-overs. The duo of Kuldeep and Chahal was a force to reckon with in white-ball cricket for India post the 2017 Champions Trophy but have hardly bowled in tandem after the 2019 World Cup.
“Someone like Kuldeep Yadav could be a great option. Why don’t we go back to Kul-cha combination and see what they can bring to the table? They won have games for India. It will be a good thing to go back to them,” said Harbhajan Singh while speaking to Sports Today.
Ashwin and Chahal didn’t create too many opportunities with the ball, says Harbhajan Singh
At the same time, the two-time World Cup winner also added that R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal failed to create too many opportunities with the ball in hand in the recent One Day series and at the same time were also defensive with their approach.
“R Ashwin and Yuzi Chahal played in the South Africa series. They didn’t create too many opportunities with the ball, they were a bit defensive with their approach. There were times when they could have attacked the opposition by putting in another slip or another man catching in. And of course, wickets were very, very true. There is no doubt about it”, he said.
While Chahal has been featuring regularly in the 50-overs format for India, this series marked the Tamil Nadu cricketer’s first ODI appearance since June 2017. In the South Africa series, the Haryana leggie could only manage two scalps from three games and Ashwin could pick up just one wicket from two matches. He was rested for the dead-rubber third ODI.
