India managed to score 273 runs in their first innings and garnered a lead of 27 runs against England in the fourth Test at The Ageas Bowl in Southampton. However, at one point in time, Moeen Ali ripped their batting apart with a five-wicket haul. The home team was cruising at 142/2 and was eventually reduced to 195/8 owing to the off-break bowler’s guile and trajectory.
Moeen picked up his first wicket in the form of Rishabh Pant, who couldn’t open his account after 29 deliveries. In his very next over, he got the better of Hardik Pandya. Thereafter, he accounted for Ravichandran Ashwin’s wicket and in the very next delivery, he removed Mohammed Shami for a golden duck. The 31-year-old tweaker picked up his fifth wicket in the form of Ishant Sharma.
They should have done better than this
He was undoubtedly England’s standout bowler with figures of 16-1-63-5. Thereafter, it was Cheteshwar Pujara’s gutsy knock of 132 runs, which guided India past England’s score. In the meantime, Harbhajan Singh, who is currently serving a commentary stint with the BBC, reckoned that India could’ve been more hard-wearing in their approach while batting.
“It’s sad the way our guys are giving away these wickets. They should have done better than this. He varied the pace beautifully and made the batsmen play all the time. The fact that there was a bit of rough outside the off-stump created by Ishant’s footmarks helped his case as well,” Harbhajan was quoted as saying in The Times of India (TOI).
The visiting team is currently 1-2 down in the five-match series and still has plenty of work to do in order to win the series. Virat Kohli’s men are in a decent position in the ongoing contest and would be keen to carry on and draw level in the series with one match remaining.
