Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul weren’t cool, rather they acted as fools: Harbhajan Singh
Hardik and Rahul have been suspended by the board pending enquiry.
India all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the wake of the controversy in the popular show ‘Koffee With Karan’ that he got carried away considering the format of the programme. The 25-year-old also apologised later over his remarks on women that were perceived as sexist but not many were ready to accept it, including former national cricketer Harbhajan Singh.
The 38-year-old spinner lashed out at Pandya and KL Rahul over their controversial remarks and more specifically at the all-rounder for revealing far too much on the show. Pandya even went to the extent of revealing his hook-ups with multiple women and said how his parents were okay with him seemingly projecting women as objects.
“At a party, my parents asked me acha tera wala [your women] kaun sa hai, so I said yeh, yeh, yeh [pointing out to some women] and they were like ‘waah proud of u beta’,” Pandya was heard saying on the show with ace filmmaker Karan Johar. He even shared the moment when he told his parents about him losing his virginity.
It was shocking to me, my seniors, my friends
Harbhajan was furious with such revelations. He said one doesn’t even discuss such things with friends, let alone on television. Supporting the step taken by the BCCI in suspending the two cricketers pending inquiry, Harbhajan told India Today: “They have openly said.. ‘I have done this, I have done that’. It was shocking to me. Many of my seniors, my friends have been talking about it and it has been shocking to all of them.”
The ace spinner also said that the all-rounder tried to look cool on television and put even other cricketers like Anil Kumble, Sachin Tendulkar and himself on the same pedestal. “We are not like them,” he said, adding that by making such remarks, one was only making a fool of oneself.
“We don’t talk about all this even with our friends and they were talking on public television. Now people might think was Harbhajan Singh like this, was Anil Kumble like this and was Sachin Tendulkar…” Harbhajan added.
“They need to understand they play cricket and people treat them as gods. They can’t go out and say such things while pretending to be cool.”
Hardik and Rahul went sent fresh show-cause notices in which they were informed about their suspension. According to reports, either an internal committee of the cricket board or an ad-hoc ombudsman will conduct the inquiry within a fortnight.
India will take on Australia in the first of the three ODIs in Sydney on Saturday and then play New Zealand in limited-overs series in both the formats.
