Harmanpreet Kaur's family overjoyed with her success
Harmanpreet's sister Hemjit compared her with the legends of the game like Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli.
Yesterday, Indian women beat Australia by 36 runs to progress into the final of the Women’s World Cup for only the 2nd time in the history. Harmanpreet Kaur was the top scorer with her unbeaten knock of 171 runs. This is the highest knock by an Indian Woman in a World Cup match. The inning has earned Harmanpreet plaudits from many quarters, including her hometown Moga in Punjab. Celebrations started early there, with youngsters in the area dancing on the roads.
Sister compared her to legends of the game
Harmanpreet’s sister Hemjit compared her with the legends of the game like Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli stating that her batting style is pretty similar to Viru and the aggressive intent in her batting has glimpses of Indian captain Virat. “She bats like Virender Sehwag and is aggressive like Virat Kohli,” Hemjit Kaur as quoted by the Indian Express
Hemjit said that Harman loved playing cricket since childhood and she used to play a lot with boys. She also said that the high strike-rate reflects her hunger for runs.
“Harman is always positive. On the field, she always behaves like Virat Kohli and is aggressive like him. However, off- field, she is quite calm and composed. Right from her early days, she treated Virender Sehwag as her batting idol and even bats like him,” her sister further added.
Many have compared Kaur’s innings with Kapil Dev‘s 175 vs Zimbabwe in 1983 World Cup. Responding to this comparison her sister said: “If Harman’s innings is being compared with the legendary Kapil Dev, then it is a great honour for her,”
Hemjit said that Harman’s father was her first coach. She also mentioned that their father failed to reach heights as a cricketer. She said that her father had talent but failed to progress in the sport due to some circumstances.
Mother credited her hard work for success
Harmanpreet’s mother Satwinder Kaur said that she has reached the heights due to her hard work. “When girls of her age would be carefree, she would sweat it out practicing for hours together. Even at home, she used to practice outside. We are proud of her,” she stated.
