Smashing a century in cricket is one of the biggest achievements for a batter, similarly, taking 5 wickets is an achievement for a bowler but picking up a hat-trick always remains a dream for any bowler. Getting three batters out on three consecutive deliveries by the same bowler gets him a hat-trick. Achieving this feat in a grand tournament like ODI World Cup puts a cherry on the cake.
Talking a hat-trick is the hardest task for a bowler as one needs to get all 3 deliveries on the target. Talking about the hat-tricks taken in the ODI World Cup, there are only 11 instances where a bowler was able to achieve this feat.
Former Indian pacer Chetan Sharma is the first bowler who took a Hat-trick in an ODI World Cup. Chetan picked up three consecutive wickets during the 1987 World Cup against New Zealand where he dismissed Ken Rutherford, Ian Smith, and Ewen Chatfield in the 24th match of the tournament.
The second hat-trick of the ODI World Cup came after 12 years when former legendary Pakistani spinner Saqlain Mushtaq produced a brilliant performance during the 1999 World Cup match against Zimbabwe. Mushtaq dismissed Henry Olonga, Adam Huckle, and Pommie Mbangwa in the first 3 balls of his 6th over and helped his team to win the match by 148 runs.
The list also includes former legendary Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga who is the only bowler to get 2 hat-tricks in ODI World Cup. His first hat-trick came against South Africa during the 2007 edition where he dismissed Shaun Pollock, Andrew Hall, Jacques Kallis, and Makhaya Ntini in 4 consecutive deliveries.
He produced another thrilling bowling display during a match against Kenya in the 2011 ODI World Cup where he picked up his 2nd hat-trick in the grand event by dismissing Tanmay Mishra, Peter Ongondo, and Shem Ngoche. However, it’d be interesting to see which bowler will impress in the upcoming World Cup and put his name in the legendary list of bowlers who have taken a hat-trick in the World Cup.
