‘He gives an extra bowling option’ - Ian Chappell wants Hardik Pandya to be picked for Australia Tests

Ian Chappell, the legendary cricketer, feels that Hardik Pandya should get a go in India’s upcoming Test series against the Aussies. The 26-year-old hasn’t played in the format since the tour of England in 2018 where his five-wicket haul helped India win the Nottingham Test. In fact, after his debut, the Gujarat-born has only played 11 matches in the longest format.

Chappell reckons that Hardik holds significance in the Test lineup, being an extra seam-bowling option. As per the veteran, Pandya also gives the chance of including a second specialist spinner for the fourth Test in Sydney, starting January 3, 2021.

“It will help if Hardik Pandya is available. He gives India an extra bowling option to maintain the pressure when the leading fast bowlers need a rest,” Chappell wrote in his column for ESPNcricinfo.

“This is Pandya’s chance to gradually build up overs in the three Tests before the SCG match, where he could act as the third seamer so that a second spinner can be included. Having Pandya at seven would necessitate Rishabh Pant keeping and batting at six,” Chappell stated.

In the meantime, Chappell said that zeroing in on a spinner won’t be an easy task for the Indian team. Ravi Ashwin has 365 Test wickets, but in Australia, he has 27 wickets from seven games. Moreover, his bowling average in Australia is 48.07, which is almost double than his career numbers.

Apart from Ashwin, Chappell mentioned that Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are in contention for the Tests. In fact, during the Sydney Test last time, Yadav churned out a fifer in the first innings. Jadeja’s batting has also developed in the last few series and Virat Kohli has shown faith in him.

“Choosing a spinner will prove a major headache for the Indian selectors. R Ashwin has a great overall record, but not so much in Australia. Ravindra Jadeja’s all-round talents and improved bowling form make him a legitimate challenger, while Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin is the biggest wicket-taking threat on Australian pitches. The decision will call for brave selections,” he added.
