Sri Lanka’s head coach Mickey Arthur and skipper Dasun Shanaka were involved in a heated altercation at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo after the hosts lost a game that indeed looked like theirs to lose at one stage.
Despite having lost the first ODI on Sunday, when Sri Lanka had set India 263 for the win, skipper Shanaka did not budge from defending the target when he called correctly for the second time in the series. The second fixture, for large parts, had a script similar to the first, with Sri Lanka adding handsome runs courtesy of the openers, but losing the plot later by losing quick wickets, before some late striking from the lower order.
Bettering their show from the first ODI when they added 49, openers Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka added 77 up top, before Yuzvendra Chahal struck on successive deliveries to claim both Bhanukas, Minod and Rajapaksa, to peg Sri Lanka back after an aggressive start.
It was Fernando and Dhanajaya de Silva who steadied the ship with a third-wicket partnership worth 47, but when Deepak Chahar got de Silva caught only a couple of overs after Bhuvneshwar Kumar had got Fernando caught after a well-made 50, Sri Lanka looked in a clear spot of bother. That they could post a competitive 275 was thanks to Charith Asalanka’s composed half-century and the late flourish of Chamika Karunaratne.
Deepak Chahar’s showstopping knock jitters Sri Lanka
Contrasting to the Sunday show when India decimated Sri Lanka with all their might, the team lost both Prithvi Shaw and Ishan Kishan cheaply, while Shikhar Dhawan could not emulate his first ODI performance either. With the entire top-order wiped out cheaply, India lost both Manish Pandey and Hardik Pandya in a space of four balls to be reduced to a perilous 116/5.
While Suryakumar Yadav struck a mighty impressive half-century and resurrected India’s hopes, Wanindu Hasaranga trapped him lbw to quash them. Indian then lost Krunal Pandya, with still 83 runs behind and Chahar and Bhuvneshwar in the middle as the last recognized pair.
In one of the most stellar comebacks, Chahar showed nerves of steel during his match-sealing 82-ball 69 that had one six and seven fours. Alongside Bhuvneshwar, who patiently secured his end and scored 19 off 28, Chahar stitched a run-a-ball 84 partnership to seal India the series at the earliest note possible.
Having seen only losses and more of it in the recent past amidst a whole lot of off-field turbulence, coming close enough to the victory to smell it and then be denied left Mickey Arthur evidently frustrated, and he was unsurprisingly seen fuming and moving animatedly in the dug-out multiple times before being involved in a debate with the captain. And just as unsurprisingly, Arthur’s antics attracted plenty of Twitter attention.
