‘He has got the Midas touch’ - Farokh Engineer backs MS Dhoni to continue as Team India’s mentor post the T20 World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took the cricket world by storm by naming MS Dhoni as Team India’s mentor for the high-voltage T20 World Cup 2021. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket last year, has been away from limelight in the past couple of years. This will also be his first involvement with the national team since the 2019 World Cup semi-final.

With Dhoni being one of the finest cricketers ever, several fans and experts hailed BCCI’s decision of getting him on board. Interestingly, current head coach Ravi Shastri’s contract expires after the T20 World Cup. Moreover, Rahul Dravid, India’s interim coach during the Sri Lanka tour earlier this year, doesn’t have any role to play in the gala tournament. Hence, many fans and experts believe Dhoni might be in the mix to take Indian cricket forward after Shastri.

Speaking of the same, former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer feels backed Dhoni to continue as mentor or take up a bigger role post the T20 World Cup. Notably, Dhoni is one of the most successful captains ever. In fact, he’s the only player to lift the 50-over World Cup, 20-over World Cup and Champions Trophy as skipper. Hence, Engineer reckons Dhoni’s experience and knowledge would certainly benefit the Virat Kohli-led team.

“I was a bit surprised to see MS Dhoni in this role, but why not? IPL has mentors. Dhoni has always and still has got the Midas touch and whatever he has touched has turned into gold. I would hope that Dhoni brings us extra luck and I’m sure his knowledge would be extremely useful. He is a World Cup-winning captain after all. So, his very presence in the dressing room will have a great effect on the team,” Engineer told Sports Tak.

“What does a mentor do? It’s an honorary thing. Sachin Tendulkar is the mentor of Mumbai Indians. And it’s lovely to have guys like him and Sachin around. In our time, once you give up the game, people forgot us. But today, fans do not forget. If you’re a good and attractive cricketer, fans will always remember you,” he added.

Meanwhile, the gala T20 tournament will get underway on October 17. The Men in Blue have been impressive in white-ball cricket lately. Hence, many are backing them to get the glory in the Arab nation.
