In the aftermath of the series loss against India, Australian cricket is in a bit of turmoil. The series loss has created noise for change in captaincy. Tim Paine, who had taken up the Test captaincy after the ball-tampering incident in 2018, was heavily criticised for his tactics. Many experts suggested the removal of Paine from the captain’s role.
In this discussion, former England cricketer Isa Guha has given her opinion. The ex-player, who has been involved in broadcasting and presenting in recent times, suggested a new wicketkeeper and captain for the side. In an interaction, Guha suggested the name of the Australian ODI and T20I wicket-keeper, Alex Carey.
She explained that Carey is one of the nicest guys in cricket and has the respect of the dressing room. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been the vice-captain of the limited-overs’ side for some time, but he hasn’t yet made his breakthrough into red-ball cricket for Australia.
Words of praises for Alex Carey
“I think he’s someone that has the respect of the dressing room, one of the nicest blokes in cricket, seems gentle and kind on the exterior but underneath that there’s definitely a determination and competitiveness that’s really suited to being an Australian cricketer and being an Australian captain as well,” Isa Guha said in the Fox Sports podcast.
Guha further revealed that former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin had suggested to her that Alex Carey is the next best keeper. She pointed out that Carey has a calm head and ability to score across the globe.
“Brad Haddin reckons he’s the next best keeper, he’s got the ability to score runs and the all-round game to be able to play on the subcontinent on fast pitches that do a bit and he’s got a cool, calm head and the respect of the dressing room,” Guha added.
Carey has played 42 ODIs and 30 T20Is for Australia so far. He has scored 1091 runs in ODIs at an average of 36. He has a good enough first-class record to break into the Australian Test side as well. He also led the Australia A team during the practice match ahead of the Indian series.
