The Indian team put on a clinical show in the first ODI against hosts Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday, defeating the African side by ten wickets. Deepak Chahar, who was returning after a prolonged injury lay-off, was awarded the player of the match for his exceptional bowling performance, and the returning pacer also made the headlines after sharing endearing moments with the fans at the venue.
The hosts were bundled out for a meagre 189 as the returning Chahar made life difficult for the Zimbabwe batters. He returned with excellent figures of 3/27 in seven overs. The prodigious swing bowler was later seen interacting with the fans present beyond the fences.
His interactions were not limited to the Indian fans only as he stood for pictures with the Zimbabwe fans as well. A Zimbabwe fan was awestruck by the Indian star’s kind gesture and could not believe his welcoming nature, which she revealed in a conversation with journalist Vimal Kumar.
“It feels good. Honestly, he is very humble. It was great on his part that he allowed me to touch him (laughs), which is uncommon because people aren’t always comfortable. But he is very accommodating,” she said.
‘When the fans are there, you play for them’ – Deepak Chahar on the presence of fans at the venue post Covid-19
The Indian bowling ace stated that the presence of fans at the venue pushes the players to do well, especially in the longer formats of the game. He also commented on his interactions with the fans and reckoned that everyone dreams to have such moments where they receive love from the fans and supporters.
“It feels great (to interact with fans). When you play international cricket and represent your country, you dream of this happening in your childhood. In COVID times, we really missed the fans because there was no one to cheer us. You need that push from the crowd to give that extra effort, especially in the longest formats like one-dayers and Tests. When the fans are there, you play for them,” Chahar said in the post-match presser.
