'He made those runs before I beat him up' - Yuvraj Singh congratulates Shubman Gill in his trademark style
Shubman Gill finished as the leading scorer in the three-match ODI series against West Indies with 205 runs to his name.
India romped West Indies in the third and final ODI of the recently-concluded series and completed an impressive 3-0 whitewash, their first in the Caribbean, under the leadership of Shikhar Dhawan. Young Indian opening batter Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten run-a-ball 98 and was adjudged the Player of the Series for his fabulous performances.
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh shared in a video on his Twitter handle, asking Shubman’s close friend and former U-19 teammate Abhishek Sharma’s opinion on his friend’s accolade.
Yuvraj, 40, was seen training in the video before he was joined by Abhishek Sharma. The Indian batting great asked Gill’s statemate to say a few words on his good friend’s accomplishments, who was named the Player of the Series after scoring 205 runs in three innings and missed out on his maiden century by just two runs. Sharma congratulated his compatriot on his achievement and also revealed that he had a chat with the Indian opener before the match, who was eyeing his maiden ODI century in Indian colours.
His video on Twitter was captioned: “Congrats @shubmangill on your first man of the series award. Here are some kind words on your performance from your good friend Sir @abhisheksharma_4.” The former Indian-all rounder was also seen bantering with the youngster and said: “Good for him that he made those runs before I beat him up. But, it’s a good way to start. There’s a long way to go.”
Shubman Gill’s statemate Abhishek Sharma is one of the rising stars in Indian cricket with a bright future
Shubman Gill made his ODI debut for the Indian team in 2019 against New Zealand in Hamilton, and in his four outings in the form of the enterprising opener has scored 238 runs at an average of 79.33. He has also represented India in 11 Test matches, in which he has 579 runs to his name, including a scintillating 91 against Australia in the historic win at Gabba in 2021.
Abhishek Sharma, who was part of the Indian U-19 team alongside Gill in India’s triumphant World Cup in 2018, had a breakthrough season in IPL 2022, scoring 426 runs in 14 appearances for SRH, and is a candidate for a place in the Indian team in the future.
