'He said yes' - Wanindu Hasaranga's translator leaves Ramiz Raja in embarrassment during the post-match presentation
Wanindu Hasaranga was rightfully named the 'Player of the Match' for his three-wicket-haul and also with the 'Player of the series' award for claiming 8 wickets in 3 matches at 9.88.
Make way for the new giant slayers in town! And, that would still be an understatement, courtesy the magnitude of what they have pulled this year. No senior players. Playing against the No.1 ranked side in their own den. New skipper. Zero expectations. Temperament, skills, and character. 3-0 whitewash.
Sri Lanka’s performance and their subsequent 3-0 win over the No.1 ranked side in the world; a team they hadn’t beaten since December 2013, is symbolic of how one perceives adversity. Bereft of their gun players, the bench strength under the inspired leadership of all-rounder Dasun Shanaka, played out of their skins to hammer a full-strength Pakistan side.
And, the template was almost the same in all the three matches. In every game, Sri Lanka found a new hero with the bat. While it was Danushka Gunalthilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in the first two games, it was the turn of Oshada Fernando in the third, to display his precocious talent.
The right-hander (78 off 48 balls) came into bat with Sri Lanka in a precarious position at 3-30 and unleashed a stunning counterattack on the Pakistanis, helping his side post an eventual match-winning target of 148. Chasing 148, Pakistan needed their top-3- Fakhkar Zaman, Babar Azam, and Haris Sohail- to be the cornerstone of their run-chase.
But, Zaman (0) got a nearly unplayable delivery first-up before Azam (27) and Sohail (52) stitched a 76-run-stand in 72 balls. But, just when they needed to press the accelerator, Babar fell against the run-of-play before Wanindu Hasaranga (3-21) ran through the middle-order, including the prized wicket of Sohail. The leg-spinner’s spell proved to be a death knell for the hosts as they eventually fell short of the target by 13 runs.
Translator for Wanindu Hasaranga trolls Ramiz
Wanindu Hasaranga was rightfully named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his three-wicket-haul and also with the ‘Player of the series’ award for claiming 8 wickets in 3 matches at 9.88. And, this is where the ‘moment of the day’ arrived. With Hasaranga speaking in his native language, the chief selector of Sri Lanka was serving as his translator.
Cricketer-turned-commentator Ramiz Raja asked Hasaranga, “Fantastic performance! Is this the best-ever you have bowled?” To which the leg-spinner replied with a plain ‘Yes’ in English. In a hilarious turn-of-events, Ramiz pulled the mike towards the translator who informed Raja that, ‘He Said Yes’, leaving the former Pakistani captain to nod in embarrassment.
