'He was sleepy and not focused' - Adam Gilchrist on Jos Buttler dropping two catches on Day 1 of the 2nd Ashes Test

Jos Buttler dropped two straightforward chances offered by Marnus Labuschagne on Day 1 of the 2nd Ashes Test match at the Adelaide Oval. Labuschagne cashed in on this and remained unbeaten on 95 at the close of play.

And now, legendary Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has offered his opinion on Buttler’s work behind the stumps. Gilchrist termed Buttler as a nice guy but added that he does not have a lot of sympathy for the England cricketer.

Gilchrist opined that Buttler took a ‘screamer’ to dismiss Marcus Harris, but put down an easier chance offered by Labuschagne. He also added that it was maybe lack of concentration that led to Buttler dropping an easy catch.

“He’s such a nice guy, but at the end of the day he is an English cricketer so you can’t have too much sympathy. I’ve been there, done that. As we all know, he took an absolute screamer earlier on to get rid of Marcus Harris, one of the great wicketkeeping catches.

Then spilt a challenging one, but a slightly easier one of Labuschagne when he was on 21. But that one late in the evening, I can only put it down to concentration,” said Adam Gilchrist in a chat with SEN.

The 50-year-old Gilchrist further said that England wicketkeepers do not have the technique to suit the conditions in Australia. Gilchrist also termed the technique of the England side as a lazy one.

“I don’t want to get too technical about the English keeping styles and techniques, but I don’t think they’ve ever really suited Australian conditions. They have a fairly lazy style and technique in compared to what we try and teach our youngsters… about foot movement and trying to access the ball,” added Gilchrist.

Gilchrist also felt that Buttler lacked concentration, and concluded by stating that Buttler might have been a little sleepy towards the fag end of the day and was not fully focussed to pouch the chance.

“Whatever his technique was it worked well in that first catch of the day, so I think it’s more just concentration. I am sure there was a few fans in the stands that were asleep so maybe Jos was a little bit sleepy too. He can’t have been fully focused prior to that delivery,” concluded Gilchrist.
