'He was very annoyed'- Subroto Banerjee recalls Javagal Srinath's first delivery to Dilip Vengsarkar

The former Indian cricketer Subroto Banerjee has revealed an interesting story on how Javagal Srinath introduced himself to Indian cricket. Srinath was part of India’s 1990 England tour and surprised the campaign with his pace and bowling skills in the net sessions. He failed to make an appearance on England tour but made his debut against Pakistan next year. Indian batters and spin bowlers were used to dominating the matches and creating records with their natural batting skills. But the Indian team always struggled for results on SENA nations due to a lack of quality pace bowling. Kapil Dev brought swing and control to Indian bowling but it was Srinath who was India’s first real-fast bowler. Srinath ended his career with 236 wickets in just 67 Test matches and 315 wickets in 229 ODIs. Srinath’s delivery hit the handle of Vengsarkar and the bat flew off: Subroto Banerjee Banerjee revealed that during net practice before England tour, Srinath bowled and troubled the former captain Dilip Vensarkar with his fierce bowling. He said that his first delivery to Vengsarkar was a bouncer that took a batter by surprise and the batter was annoyed at Srikanth for bowling bouncers in training sessions. Vengsarkar asked Srikanth to not bowl bouncers in the net and Srikanth listened to him. But he bowled the next bowl a perfect yorker and Banerjee stated that that delivery crushed Vengsarkar’s toes. “Bedi chucked the ball to him. He said, “Are you going to bowl?” He said, “Yes sir”. That was the first time I ever saw a bowler bowl that quick in India. He bowled a bouncer. It came straight and hit the handle of Vengsarkar and the bat flew off. Vengsarkar was very annoyed because it was just net practice and he came to start bowling bouncers,” Subroto Banerjee said on the YouTube show, ‘Mid Wicket Tales With Naseeruddin Shah.’ “He wasn’t prepared because the very first ball was a bouncer. Vengsarkar told him not to bowl bouncers. On the second ball, he bowled a straight yorker. And it went straight and crushed his toes,” he added.
