India succumbed to an embarrassing defeat against England by 227 runs in the first Test of the four-match series and is lagging behind in the Test series by 0-1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli had produced a match-defining knock of 72 runs in the fourth innings but failed to take India home as he didn’t get support from other players.
Despite the loss in the first Test, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra was all praises for Kohli and backed him to score as many as 250 runs if he manages to win the toss in the next Test match at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Nehar also lauded Kohli for his knock of 72 runs and asserted that anyone would have got out on the ball he was dismissed.
“You are talking about one or two centuries, I would say when India wins the toss, he will score 250 also. This is the special thing about Virat Kohli. When Ashwin got out, he knew that they would lose the match but he did not play any airy-fairy shots.”
“He takes pride in scoring his own runs, that he should not get out. Anyone would have got out to the ball he was dismissed, it kept extremely low,” Ashish Nehra said on Star Sports.
The desire makes Virat Kohli different from others: Ashish Nehra
The fourth innings of the first Test against England saw a collapse of India’s batting line-up as they were bundled out for a paltry total of 192 runs. Apart from Kohli and Gill, who scored a stunning half-century, no other batsman could survive on Day 5.
During the course of interaction, Ashish Nehra also heaped praises on the Indian skipper for his desire of always performing for the team and looking forward to contributing towards the victory.
“He kept at it which you need to do on the fourth and fifth days on a subcontinent pitch. The desire makes this player different from others and it is not only here, when he couldn’t score runs in England, very few people would have seen Virat Kohli lunging forward to play the defensive shots. To do that, you need fitness,” Nehra concluded.
