'Heard good reviews about batting consultant' - Herschelle Gibbs takes a cheeky dig at Amol Muzumdar
Muzumdar is SA batting consultant for the ongoing India series.
Naturally, a lot of former South African cricketers have been left disappointed by how their side has played in this series. A few of them have vented their anger on social media, while some like Herschelle Gibbs – former tearaway opener- have been taking sly digs.
The South Africans are up against it in the second Test in the MCA Stadium in Pune. After having been grounded under the mountain of runs (5-601), the visitors were bamboozled by the relentless of the Indian attack- pace and spin.
On a track that had a considerable amount of help for the fast bowlers, with sideways movement coming into play, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami landed a killer blow on the top-order. At 5/52, it looked like the prospect of another hiding was shaping up but skipper Du Plessis dug in with De Kock to take the score past the 100-run mark.
The South African captain came out with positive intent and ably tackled the Indian spinners before Ashwin induced a false shot to land another killer blow to the South Africans.
Herschelle Gibbs disappointed with SA batting
Disappointed with another insipid display by the top-order, Gibbs took to Twitter to take a sly dig at South Africa’s batting consultant for the series: former Domestic stalwart Amol Muzumdar. Gibbes tweeted, “And we heard such good reviews about the local batting consultant, wonder what his thoughts are,” Gibbs wrote on his official Twitter handle.
Muzumdar has an impeccable resume as batting coach
Since his retirement after a two-decade-long career, Muzumdar has established himself in the coaching arena and has received high-performance coaching certificates from the BCCI, Cricket Australia as well as from English counties like Yorkshire and Lancashire.
Amol has previously worked with Rajasthan Royals in the last IPL season besides coaching the likes of India U19 and U23 at the National Cricket Academy and the Netherlands national team.
As far as the South African batting struggles is concerned, they’ll do well if they can learn from the likes of Maharaja and Vernon Philander, both of whom showed real fight and character.
