The ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 has seen a massive upsurge in terms of viewership. The tournament edition is arguably the most successful in the history of Women’s cricket. On the eve of the ultimate game of the tournament, the two competing skippers – Heather Knight and Mithali Raj – spoke at length about the growth that the brand of cricket has had in the tournament.

English skipper Heather Knight showed keen interest on seeing more opportunities come in the way for the women cricketers. Mithali Raj, the Indian captain, also hoped for a women’s IPL to get underway some time soon. Raj noted that the entire nation is backing the women in blue. She believes that things will change the fortunes of women’s cricket if India lifts the trophy. She added that the BCCI might well consider a women’s IPL as well.

“The whole country is rooting for India. This can change the fortunes for women’s cricket. The BCCI now is definitely looking up to it. There might be a lot of changes back home, if we go on to win the World Cup, and they will benefit future generations to come. Maybe a women’s IPL might be in the pipeline,” quoted Mithali Raj.

India in finals is the best result

On the commercial grounds, India has always been the hot spot for the sport. English skipper Heather Knight very well knows this fact. She conceded that having India in the finals of the tournament is the best thing possible for women’s cricket. She added that a women’s IPL would be brilliant. The fact that the WBBL and Kia Super League are a big hit only makes way for something grander like IPL to get underway soon.

“India being in the final is the best result for women’s cricket, with massive scope for growth and support. With their team being in the final, the BCCI will hopefully take note and support women’s cricket as it should be. A women’s IPL would be brilliant,” quoted Heather Knight.

“Australia’s Big Bash League and the Kia Super League over here have been really successful and they’ve been a part of pushing international cricket forward. The players that have been involved in those competitions have developed and performed at this World Cup,” she added further.
