The All India senior selection committee, on Wednesday (December 8), named Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI skipper, replacing Virat Kohli, who recently relinquished T20I captaincy following the end of India’s campaign at the 2021 T20 World Cup.
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward,” read BCCI’s tweet, while announcing India’s 18-man Test squad for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa, starting December 26.
Rohit took the mantle of captaincy from Kohli in the shortest format as the latter had announced his decision to step down from the role to manage his workload better. However, Kohli had clearly stated his desire to continue leading India’s ODI and Test team. Unsurprisingly, BCCI’s decision, it seemed, was more of an imposition than one having Kohli’s assent.
However, a day later, the BCCI president Sourav Ganguly opened up to reveal that he as well as the Chetan Sharma-led panel of selectors spoke to Kohli, stating the idea of avoiding two different captains in the different white-ball formats.
“It’s a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats,” as quoted by Timesnownews.
“So, it was decided that Virat will continue as Test captain and Rohit will take over as the white-ball captain. I as President personally spoke to Virat Kohli and the chairman of selectors has also spoken to him.
“We have full faith in Rohit Sharma’s leadership abilities, and Virat will continue as the Test captain. We as BCCI are confident that Indian cricket is in good hands. We thank Virat Kohli for his contributions as captain in the white-ball format,” the BCCI president added.
Rohit Sharma’s salary as India’s full-time limited-overs captain
As per a GQ report, there will be no change in Rohit’s salary from the BCCI. He is paid a sum of INR 7 crore annually by virtue of holding an A+ contract, along with Kohli and pacer Japsrit Bumrah.
Meanwhile, leadership comes as nothing new for Rohit, who has an unmatched record while leading his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, having taken the team to five titles after he took charge in 2013.
In his limited experience of international captaincy, he has managed to stack up impressive numbers, having won eight of the 10 ODIs he has led the team so far, including winning the 2018 Asia Cup while standing in for Kohli. In the shorter format, Rohit has 18 wins in 22 games, of which three came recently against New Zealand at home in his maiden series as the full-time captain.
