Ravindra Jadeja became the latest victim of the ICC’s Code of Conduct as the No.1 ranked all-rounder and bowler in the Test cricket received a one-match ban for his dangerous throw at the batsman in his follow through as his demerit points’ total increased to 6. The ICC Code of Conduct effective from 22nd September 2016, awards certain demerit points to players as well as the support staff for various level offences.
The players and support staff will be carrying the demerit points for a 24-year time period and will receive suspension points if they continue to increase their demerit points tally. Players will get two suspension points for 4 to 7 demerit points, 4 suspension points for 8 to 11 demerit points and 6 suspension points if their demerit points’ tally crosses 12 in a 24-year period.
The two suspension points are equivalent to a one Test ban or two ODIs or two T20I matches ban. In the last few months, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada got banned for a Test match along with Ravindra Jadeja while Sri Lanka’s Niroshan Dickwella got banned from two ODIs in February. The Sri Lankan keeper has bagged the most number of demerit points (7) so far as he committed three offences since the last September and is on verge of receiving 4 suspension points.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct, the demerit points are awarded based on the offences committed due to their behaviour during the game either on or off the field-of-play. This includes support staff too as UAE coach Owais Shah and West Indies’ coach Stuart Law bagged a demerit point for their foul behaviour and questioning the umpires for decisions.

This code of conduct is also applicable for Women’s cricket as the Indian middle order batswoman, Veda Krishnamurthy being the only one so far to bag more than one demerit point. Harmanpreet Kaur also bagged a demerit point for showing dissent over her fellow team-mate Deepti Sharma in the semi-final against Australia.
