The Indian Premier League is one of the richest cricket tournaments in the world. The amount involved in the league is sometimes difficult to digest by cricket fans. Players sometimes go berserk by looking at the amount that they will be drawing from the IPL contract. IPL has often been termed as ‘Indian Paisa League’ due to the involvement on money at various levels in the tournament. This has backfired on several occasions but as long as cricket is at the centre stage and money is not given first priority, the IPL will do just fine.

The recently concluded IPL season could be adjudged as the best season of IPL that the T20 league has seen so far. There were more close matches than people expected. Top four teams were finalized only on the last day of the league stages. Eventually, the Chennai Super Kings bagged yet another IPL title. They won a cash prize of Rs 20 Crore while Rs 12.5 Crore was paid to Sunrisers Hyderabad who emerged as the runners-up. While the amount paid to the teams is open and clear, the salary of coaches in IPL something that has never been revealed.

Astronomical numbers

A recent report published in Times of India has revealed that Daniel Vettori, head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore is the highest paid coach in the IPL. He is followed by RCB’s bowling coach, Ashish Nehra, who draws a cheque of Rs 4 Crore. Delhi Daredevils coach Ricky Ponting earns 3.7 crores while CSK’s Stephen Fleming is fourth on the list with 3.2 crores.

Indian stalwart Virender Sehwag earns 3 crores while Shane Warne gets paid 2.7 crores by the Rajasthan Royals. VVS Laxman and Tom Moody, members of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s coaching staff, are paid Rs 2 Crore followed by Gary Kirsten, batting coach RCB, and Lasith Malinga, bowling mentor MI, who draw Rs 1.5 Crore each.

After Star India entered into a historic deal with the BCCI for the media rights, the IPL has grown by leaps and bounds. Star is inclined towards making IPL bigger and bigger with each passing year. The number of viewers is growing each year and Star’s innovative efforts to capture more crowd is definitely working.
