The players of England and Australia, both men and women, came out to the field wearing a poppy on their jersey on Saturday to honour the sacrifices made on the anniversary of the end of the First World War. Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of World War I on that date in 1918. The cricket is paused across the nations at the 11th hour of the day as the hostilities had formally ended at that time during the World War. The red remembrance poppy which was worn by the players is a familiar emblem of the day.
England men’s and women’s team are currently in Australia to play Ashes series as the former is involved in the warm-ups and the latter is in the middle of the Test series. Cricket Australia XI lost the game only to boost the confidence of the visiting team. Chris Woakes, James Anderson and Craig Overton wreaked havoc under lights on the third day and picked seven wickets only for 70 runs in the second innings.
On the final day, the formalities were completed as the remaining three wickets were lost for just 5 more runs. Eventually, England won by massive 192 runs which will surely give them a lot of confidence amidst all the injuries they have suffered so far.
Australia Women sneak out a crucial lead
In the Women’s Ashes, the ongoing Test match is interestingly poised which is also being played with the pink ball in Sydney, Australia has sneaked out ahead of the visitors total. Ellyse Perry is unbeaten on 151 currently along with Tahlia McGrath (38*) as the hosts have scored 448/6. They would look to take a huge lead in the first innings and kill the game for England. Alyssa Healy and Rachel Haynes also played crucial knocks and supported Perry in her marathon innings.
Earlier, England, after opting to bat first, posted a competitive total of 280 in their first innings. Tammy Beaumont and the skipper Heather Knight scored half-centuries at the top and helped propel to a decent score. However, the bowlers now have to skittle Australia out soon to have any chance of coming back in the match.
