Last few months have been quite tough for Rohit Sharma, first, he was ruled out of India vs Australia Test series due to a thigh injury. Then he was out of form for a major part of the IPL, though it ended well as he become the first captain to lift the IPL on 3 separate occasions. But his lean form meant there were murmurings that he should be dropped from the Champions Trophy squad.
KL Rahul’s injury and Sharma’s pedigree as an opener in the last few years got him the nod from the selectors. He proved them right yesterday when he rediscovered his magical touch and scored 91 runs in balls in the high-pressure encounter vs Pakistan.
Here’s how Rohit sorted out his technique before the game.
Rohit put in a lot of hard work in nets over the last few days. No Indian batsman had batted longer than the Mumbaikar in the nets. He fine-tuned his touch hitting ball after ball thrown at him from different angles.
Couple of days ago, Rohit worked on his technique with India’s batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who gave him many throwdowns and kept on suggesting minor changes to sort his technique, like standing up straighter rather than being bent lower so that the weight of the body stays on the front foot which came useful in combating the swing of Mohammad Amir.
The amount of effort put behind gave him a lot of confidence which was evident from the fact that he didn’t look disgusted when India was put into bat after Sarfaraz Ahmed won the toss and opted to ball. He seemed to be a man who was quite comfortable in his zone.
Apart the from the first over from Amir where he played and missed a lot, once he shrugged his initial nerves, his innings seemed to be a replica of the flawless sessions he had in the nets over the last few days
Well ‘Practice makes you perfect’ they said, very well said!
