England registered a well-deserved five-wicket win over New Zealand in the first Test at the Home of Cricket Lord’s on June 5. The pulsating contest that lasted for four days saw both teams suffering batting collapses and some incredible bowling performances on what seemed to be a seam-friendly surface. This was only in the first innings as the batters of both sides showed a lot of character in the second innings.

The visitors looked to post a daunting target for England before they suffered yet another awkward batting collapse in their second innings and were bundled out for 285 thereby setting a huge target of 277 for England. Nonetheless, the Ben Stokes-led side ensured that they suffered no hiccups in their chase and successfully got the job done on the morning of the fourth day to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

More importantly, the win has given the Three Lions something to cheer about in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-2023 points table and the reigning WTC champions find themselves in a spot of bother.

England continue to languish at the bottom, Australia retain the top spot

In the lately updated points table after the conclusion of the Lord’s Test match between England and New Zealand, the Three Lions continue to be at the eighth spot in the points table despite a convincing win. They have only 30 points from 13 matches and more importantly, this is just their second victory of the ongoing WTC cycle. The Kiwis on the other hand have a  points percentage of 33.33% and are almost out of contention for defending their title this time around. They are in the seventh position,

Bangladesh continue to be at the rock bottom with percentage points of 16.67% while the West Indies and Pakistan take the sixth and fifth positions respectively with PCTof 37.71 and 52.38 respectively.

With a PCT of 55.56, Sri Lanka take the fourth spot whereas, India find themselves in the third position with a points percentage of 58.33%. Having had a memorable first half of 2022, South Africa occupy second place with a PCT of 71.43. Meanwhile, with an undisputed points percentage of 75%,  Australia are comfortably sitting at the top of the ICC World Championship 2021-23 points table.

Both England and New Zealand will next be seen in action in the second Test match that will be played at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on June 10.
