The first Test match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka played at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram ended in a hard-fought draw after both teams showed equal dominance in a high-scoring encounter on a typical batting surface. Even though the Lankans showcased a remarkable batting performance scoring 397 in the first innings riding on an outstanding 199 from Angelo Mathews, the hosts were very good while counter-attacking in their first innings as they scored 465 courtesy of centuries from veterans Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim respectively.
The interesting Test match also witnessed a monumental achievement that saw Mushfiqur Rahim become the first Bangladesh player to surpass 5,000 runs in red-ball cricket. Sri Lanka in their second innings easily overhauled Bangladesh’s first innings lead of 68 runs and ensured that they batted the entire day to earn a draw. A fighting knock of an unbeaten 39 runs from 135 deliveries from Dinesh Chandimal along with an important 61 not out from wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella ensured that the visitors finished the fifth day at 260/6.
