The opening Test of the second cycle of the World Test Championship ended in a draw as rain played spoilsport on the final day in Nottingham, with India needing 157 runs and nine wickets in hand.
India had bundled out the hosts for 183 in the first innings on the back of seven wickets amongst pace twins Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, while in response, the visitors managed a 95-run lead courtesy KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja’s half-centuries and a wagging.
England skipper Joe Root, who scored a half-century in the first innings, notched up his 21st century in the second, helping his team post a 209-run target for India. With a considerable amount of play lost on days two and three, India finished Day 4 52/1, looking in pole position to secure a 1-0 lead. That, however, was denied after not even a single ball was delivered on the final day of the Test. With the first Test ending in a draw, both India and England shared four points each.
In the second cycle, each team plays a total of six series – three home and as many away. Only the Ashes and the England-India series are five-match affairs, with all other tie-ups being either two or three-match series; the only exception being India and Australia’s series that will have four matches.
The most notable change in the current cycle is in the points system, as each win will award a team 12 points, a tie six points, draw four and a loss zero respectively, as opposed to the previous structure where 120 points were assigned to each series.
Both India and England will now meet at Lord’s in the second fixture of the five-match series.
