The media rights auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in Mumbai earlier in the week caught the attention of one and all of the cricketing fraternity as the price per match for the 2023-27 cycle hit a whopping INR 57.40 crore. To put things in perspective, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), on the other hand, hit only INR 2.76 crore for the 2022-23 cycle.

Only after the first day of the media rights auction on June 12 (Sunday), it was clear that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was in for one of the biggest media rights auctions in the world, as the IPL overtook one of the most popular football leagues in the world, the English Premier League whose corresponding figure was around INR 86 crore

Speaking about the broadcast rights of the two top-tier leagues, the PSL signed a two-year broadcast deal in 2021 with A Sports and PTV Sports. According to the PCB, the deal is worth USD 24 million and represents a 50% increase on the last cycle which had USD 36 million over the span of three years. Interestingly, A Sports, owned by the ARY Group also owns 2020 PSL winners Karachi Kings, one of the franchises in the league.

Meanwhile, Viacom18 bagged digital rights for INR 23,758 crore for the IPL whereas Disney Star retained the TV rights for INR 23,575 crore for the 2023-27 cycle. Adding to that, the TV rights per match hit a whopping INR 57.40 crore whereas the digital media rights per match will obtain INR 50 per match. Viacom18 and Times Internet won the overseas slots for the broadcast with the former winning the Australia, South Africa and UK regions while Times Internet taking the Middle East and North Africa and the US region.

It is a matter of immense pride for me: Jay Shah

Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, said that it was a proud moment to see that the Indian league is now the second-most lucrative sports property across the world.

“No cricket property in the world has been sold for such a high value and it is with immense pride that I share that IPL today is the second most valuable sports league in the world. In just 15 years, the IPL has moved ahead of the globally popular English Premier League, Major League Baseball (MLB), and The National Basketball Association (NBA),” wrote Shah, who was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

“It is indeed a proud moment to see that a league designed and conceptualized in India is now the second-most lucrative sports property,” Shah added.

The IPL was introduced in 2008 as an annual event with eight franchises featuring some of the best cricketers with marquee players on each team. Earlier, it was learned from the tweets by Shah that money would be distributed among the eight original franchises Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, and Punjab Kings, as each of these teams is expected to get around INR 3,000 crore. A part of the revenue will also go to state associations, players, and staff.
