The Indian Premier League has become one of the flagship franchise-based T20 tournament in the world. Only the best players around the world get the opportunity to feature in the tournament. Cricketers know that an IPL contract can go a long way in making them a better cricketer. During the IPL, even when a player is not playing he is sharing the dressing room with the best cricketing brains in the world. This experience is priceless and players know the value of such opportunities.
Chris Gayle has played some breathtaking innings in the IPL over the past few years. He has been one of the impact players of the tournament who always entertained his fans. However, the big man saw a dip in form and the Royal Challengers Bangalore decided to release him for the 11th edition.
He was then purchased by the Kings XI Punjab for his base price of 2 crores. The Universal Boss went to Punjab after a bit of drama as he went unsold twice before finally earning the contract.
Always in the limelight
In an interview with Mirror, the swashbuckling opener has revealed that he was not surprised at how things panned at the auction. “No, no, no. I was not surprised. Whether it was the first or last minute (being picked) does not matter. But I don’t have too many expectations in life. You have to prepare yourself for disappointments. I have seen these things happen in the IPL. I was not actually following the auction. It was early morning for me back home in the Caribbean,” he said. His IPL career seemed to be over but Virender Sehwag and Co decided to give him an opportunity in a new environment.
Gayle produced some good innings at the start but failed to capitalize on his form in the latter stages. He scored 368 runs from 11 matches which is average by his standards. After his century in the contest against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he had said that Virender Sehwag has saved the IPL by purchasing the big man. There is still some fuel left in Gayle and he will be keen to work more on his game to perform better next season.
