Here's why Yasir Shah signalled 'seven' after dismissing Steve Smith on Day 3
Yasir Shah was the best bowler from the visiting side, picking up 4/205 in 48.4 overs.
Australia extended their dominance over Pakistan in the first Test match at the Gabba in Brisbane thanks to amazing centuries from David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne. The Azhar Ali-led side was made to toil hard for 158 overs under the sun and almost every bowler of theirs’s despite looking impressive, failed to pick early wickets.
The only blot on the otherwise impressive Australian scorecard was Steve Smith, as the right-handed batsman managed just 4 runs to his name. The batsman came into this tournament with 774 runs against England behind him, Australia had expected him to do miracles with the bat at home turf, but a beauty of a delivery from Pakistani leg-spinner Yasir Shah sent him back into the pavilion for just four runs to his name.
Yasir Shah celebrated Steve Smith’s dismissal with a unique signal
Steve Smith looked good at the start but got out to a faster one from Yasir Shah, which was fuller in length. He had started off with a four earlier in the same over and tried to whip the ball to the leg side when he missed it and lost his timber in the process. The leg spinner celebrated his second wicket of the match signalling ‘seven’ as his teammates joined him.
The 33-year-old was ecstatic given that he had gotten the no.1 ranked batsman of the format for the seventh time in Test cricket in six matches. This was the seventh time in six Test Shah has got the better of Smith. The only bowler to get Smith out more than Yasir is Stuart Broad from England, who had got the Sydney-born batsman eight times in 24 Tests. Yasir Shah was the best bowler from the visiting side, picking up 4/205 in 48.4 overs. Shaheen Afridi and Haris Sohail picked two wickets as well.
Meanwhile, Marnus Labuschagne’s 185 and David Warner’s 154, along with Joe Burns’ 97 and Matthew Wade’s 60 helped Australia put up 580 on the board to Pakistan’s first innings total of 240. In the second innings, by the stumps on day 3, Pakistan had made 64/3 with Shan Masood on the crease with 27 to his name and he is partnered by Babar Azam, who has made 20. Pakistan still trail by 276 runs and have seven wickets in hand.
