'He's been a solid backer of my stance' - Glenn Maxwell opens up on how Virat Kohli supported him during his mental struggle
The RCB side pouched Glenn Maxwell in the 2021 IPL auction for a sum of INR 14.25 Crores.
Glenn Maxwell recently revealed before the IPL 2021 auctions that he would love to share the dressing room with batting legend and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli. And, after the auctions, Maxwell’s wish was fulfilled. The RCB franchise went all out to procure the services of Maxwell and bought him for a colossal sum of INR 14.25 Crores.
And, the Aussie all-rounder is not a stranger to mental struggles. In fact, in 2019 he had taken a break from the game due to mental issues. And now, Maxwell has stated how Kohli backed him when he spoke to the Indian skipper about the mental aspect of the game.
The Aussie revealed that Kohli was a ‘solid backer’ of Maxwell’s take on the issue. He also added that Kohli understood a lot about the expectations and pressure that a cricketer goes through and said that the RCB captain could relate to everything he spoke about.
“He’s been a solid backer of my stance. In a way, he probably understood a lot of the things that I was going through, a lot of expectation and pressure, which I’m sure he can relate to,” said Maxwell to AAP.
He’s been the pinnacle of the game: Glenn Maxwell about Kohli
The Australian also praised Kohli, stating that he has been the pinnacle of the game in every format of the game. The 32-year-old praised Kohli’s ability to adapt and dominate the game for a long period of time, especially being an Indian skipper and a batsman.
“It’s going to be next level. He’s been the pinnacle of the game for a while as a multi-format player from Tests all the way to T20s. He’s been able to adapt his game, dominate for a long period of time and deal with the Indian pressure of being their captain and their best player,” concluded Maxwell.
Maxwell had an abysmal run in the 13th edition of the IPL. He could score just 108 runs in 11 innings last year and averaged only 15.43. With the ball too, he could scalp just 3 wickets. The Australian stalwart will be hoping that a change in his team for the 14th edition will bring about a change in fortunes as well.
