T20 cricket has revolutionised the game in unimaginable ways. The game of cricket is renowned for its unpredictability and if anything, the 20-over format has only infused more of it in the game. Who could have imagined target ranges of 200 in 120 balls worth cricket?

The shortest format has left colour on the longer version of the game as well. The definitions of a safe target have changed. What was earlier scored in 50 overs is being made and chased down in 20 overs today. The value of each wicket has diminished drastically with the advent of this format.

The definition of a good batsman is no more the one who settles himself in before going for the shots, but the one who blasts off from the word go. Some changes have been for the good, some for the bad.

Over the years of the IPL, there have been innumerable records that have been scripted by players and the teams. The upcoming one is going to be the 13th edition of the league, and the IPL has stayed around long enough to generate ample statistics and records for us to devour and digest. The tournament has had many, many high-scoring as well as quite a few low-scoring games as well.

<strong>Let us take a look at the highest and lowest totals of each team in the history of the IPL:</strong>

The four-time champions posted their highest total in the 2017 edition when they scored 223 at the loss of six wickets, surprisingly, in a losing cause against the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ipl-2020-jonty-rhodes-takes-a-one-handed-stunner-during-kings-xi-punjabs-training-session/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Kings XI Punjab</strong></a>. The quick-fire knocks of Wriddhiman Saha (91 from 55) and Glenn Maxwell (47 from 21) led Punjab to 230/3.

In response, Lendl Simmons (59 from 32) and Parthiv Patel (38 from 23) provided a brilliant start to their team before Kieron Pollard (50 from 24) and Hardik Pandya (30 from 13) took MI almost across the line. However, some good death bowling by KXIP restricted MI 7 runs short.

<strong>Lowest &#8211; 87/10 against SRH</strong>

Mitchell McClenaghan, Hardik Pandya, and Mayank Markande bowled with great control and dominance to restrict the Sunrisers Hyderabad for a below-par total of 118 in the 23<sup>rd</sup> match of the 2018 edition of the IPL. Little did MI know that Siddharth Kaul, Rashid Khan, and youngster Basil Thampi would build such a web around them that they will never be able to free themselves. Chasing 119 to win, MI was dismissed for a paltry 87 and lost the match by 31 runs.

The three-time champions registered their highest score long back in 2010 when they slammed 246 in 2010 against the Rajasthan Royals courtesy a blistering 56-ball 127 knock by Murli Vijay, that included 11 sixes.

Vijay was well assisted by the Protea all-rounder <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/twitter-reactions-albie-morkel-jonty-rhodes-and-paul-harris-shine-for-south-africa-in-a-stunning-comeback-win/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Albie Morkel</strong></a>, who raced off to 62 off just 34 deliveries as CSK finished 246 for 5 in their 20 overs. In response, Naman Ojha and Shane Watson’s knock of unbeaten 94 from 55 and 60 from 25 respectively did bring Rajasthan close, but not close enough and they lost the game by 23 runs.

Coming to chase a rather simple target, CSK tumbled for only 79 runs with Mitchell Johnson, Pragyan Ojha, Lasith Malinga, and Harbhajan Singh, all walking over them.

The Kolkata Knight Riders slammed a massive 245 at the loss of 6 wickets – fourth highest in the league ever to this day – against Kings XI Punjab in the 2018 edition of the IPL, courtesy some scintillating knocks of Sunil Narine (75 from 36), Dinesh Karthik (50 from 23), and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/i-think-there-is-a-bit-of-bromance-david-hussey-clears-rumours-of-a-rift-between-andre-russell-and-dinesh-karthik/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Andre Russell</strong> </a>(31 from 14) amongst other cameos. KXIP came out blazing as well with KL Rahul and R Ashwin scoring 29-ball 66 and 22-ball 45 respectively, however, they fell short by a considerable margin of 31 runs.

The lowest score of KKR came ages ago in the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 against the Mumbai Indians, who dismissed them for merely 67 runs. Their score, to this date, is the joint fourth lowest in the history of the tournament. In response, Sanath Jayasuriya’s blitzkrieg of 48 from 17 saw MI chase the target down in just 5.3 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

<strong>4. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)</strong>

The RCB posted an astronomical sum of 263 at the loss of 5 wickets against the hapless Pune Warriors India in the 31<sup>st</sup> match of the 2013 season. The PWI bore the brunt of Chris Gayle’s pyrotechnics, who slammed an incredible 17 sixes and 13 fours en route to his indescribable carnage of 175 from ONLY 66 balls– the highest individual score in not just IPL, but the format of T20 cricket till date.

RCB’s 263 for 5 is the highest score registered by a team in IPL and the 4<sup>th</sup> highest in the T20 format. In response, the PWI could not even match Gayle’s tally and got dismissed for 133 for 9, to hand RCB the 5<sup>th</sup> biggest victory in terms of margins of runs in the IPL.

Not a single batsman was able to post a score in double-digits and 5 years after posting the highest score in the IPL history, the RCB got to its name the lowest-ever score in the league’s history as well.

The Hyderabad-based franchise registered its highest score in the last year’s edition of IPL against RCB in a home game. The openers– Jonny Bairstow and David Warner– were on fire as they slammed 114 from 56 and 100 from 55 respectively, before SRH posted 231 for two after their 20 overs. Chasing 232 to win, RCB was jolted by Mohammad Nabi and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/a-month-long-break-can-affect-the-game-of-a-bowler-sandeep-sharma-worried-about-ipl-postponement/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Sandeep Sharma</strong></a>, who bagged four and three wickets respectively as the Challengers were dismissed for just 113 in 19.5 overs.

SRH had contrasting fortunes just a week later in the same edition in another home game against Mumbai Indians. All their bowlers chipped in well to restrict MI to 136 for seven after 20 overs. In what should have been an easy chase, the SRH batting line-up floundered horribly in front of Alzarri Joseph, who bagged an incredible 6-wicket haul giving just 12 runs. Joseph’s outstanding efforts with the ball led SRH to collapse for 96 in 17.4 overs. His 6 for 12 stands as the best figures in the history of the league to this day.

Kumble’s 5-wicket haul crumbled Rajasthan and they were dismissed for a paltry sum of 58 in 15.1 overs thereby losing the game by 75 runs.

The Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) recorded their highest team score against KXIP in the 2011 edition of the IPL. Batting first, the dangerous and destructive duo of Virender Sehwag and David Warner scored an identical 77, the former, however in 35 balls, whereas, the latter in 48 balls, to take their total to 231 for four.

In response, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/fractured-forearm-rules-shaun-marsh-out-of-2019-world-cup-replacement-named/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>Shaun Marsh</strong></a> slapped 95 from just 46 alongside Adam Gilchrist, who anchored with his 42 from 33. However, the other batsmen in the middle-order failed to stick around after their dismissals and Punjab lost the match to Delhi by 29 runs.

The double Ds had a horror outing against the Mumbai Indians in the 2017 edition during a home game. Coming to chase a humungous target, the DD was rattled by Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma, who both picked 3 wickets, and Lasith Malinga’s might.

They were dismissed for a negligible 66 runs in 13.4 overs – the third-lowest total in the IPL history to date. MI won the match by a massive margin of 146 runs i.e. the biggest victory in terms of margin of runs in the history of the tournament.

What was earlier scored in 50 overs is being made and chased down in 20 overs today. The value of each wicket has diminished drastically with the advent of this format.</p>
<p>The definition of a good batsman is no more the one who settles himself in before going for the shots, but the one who blasts off from the word go. Some changes have been for the good, some for the bad.</p>

The tournament has had many, many high-scoring as well as quite a few low-scoring games as well.</p>
