The 18th edition of the IPL will set sail on March 22 as reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) cross swords with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Over the years, the league has seen some fantastic opening partnerships. Last year, Sunil Narine and Phil Salt set the stage ablaze for the Knights and their partnership at the top of the order played a huge role in helping the Kolkata-based franchise win their first title in 10 years. Sunrisers Hyderabad, who finished runners-up also had a formidable opening pair, with left-handers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma lighting up the IPL with their fearless batting.
Teams who have done well in a particular season of the IPL have most of the times had successful opening partnerships. In-form openers can be a massive asset for teams as they make things easier for the batters to follow by making the most of the field restrictions inside the powerplay.
