To achieve a monumental total or while chasing a massive target, teams always hope to see some big partnerships from their batters. There are many instances when two batters stitched a brilliant partnership and helped their teams to win a match or amass a big total in the ODI format.
Good partnerships need time, patience, and two batters who genuinely want to help their side win. However, when it comes to a major cricket tournament such as the ODI World Cup, it becomes more important than ever for the team. The major world event has witnessed many legendary partnerships in the history of the tournament.
The partnership between Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle which came against Zimbabwe during the 2015 ODI World Cup is the highest partnership ever made in the history of the World Cup. Both stitched a massive 372-run for the 2nd wicket, with Gayle smashing a double hundred and Samuels playing an electric knock of 133 runs.
The partnership of 318 runs for the 2nd wicket between the former legendary Indian batters Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid comes second on the list of highest partnerships. Both put up a brilliant batting display against Sri Lanka in the group stage of the 1999 World Cup. Both smashed outstanding centuries each and helped the team to get to a monumental target of 373 runs. Ganguly also won the Player of the Match award for scoring 183 runs.
The 2011 edition of the grand tournament witnessed the highest opening partnership in the history of the tournament. Former Sri Lankan openers Tilakratne Dilshan and Upul Tharanga stitched a 282-run stand for the first wicket against Zimbabwe at Pallekele in March 2011. Both also smashed centuries and thrashed the Zimbabwe bowlers all around the park.
Meanwhile, India are set to host the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023 and it is anticipated that the pitch will be favourable for the batters, and the fans would witness more big partnerships. The tournament is all set to start on October 5.
